Ok, well firstly you need to be proficient with the tools in The GIMP. The way they have done this, is they have layered a gradient, stars, a figure, light effects, and a strip of text, altered the colours and stuff–and this has all been done probably at a resolution of 500×500 or even bigger perhaps, then resized down to 100×100 (because you easy to get more quality in in 500×500 and resizing down than from just working in 100×100) and done a two-pixel border around the square fo the final touch: the inner pixel being white, and the outer being a desaturated pink.

And how to make it in 50×50 available for avatars?

webcam pics are always blurry and grainy with crappy color.
1. take a picture with the highest resolution and save it.
2. and then shrink the picture down to 50 pixels by clicking: image > image size. Also lower resolution to 72. Save it as jpeg

if you don’t like the color, adjust it prior to shrinking it

Please follow these simple instructions if you are thinking of making a cartoon avatar:
→ go to “ http://avatars.yahoo.com/ ” if you want to upload a picture of yourself or anything else to use as your avatar from your computer. Just keep reading a bit more if you want to know the procedures on how to go about this if you are still stuck:
⇒ You will see different tabs, “home” “appearance” “apparel”….. Etc. Just click on any and choose different clothing for your avatar.
⇒ If you think you have finished, Look below your avatar on that page and click on the orange link that says “save changes”. Return back to Answers now when you have finished “ http://answers.yahoo.com/ ”
⇒ One last thing, go to “your profile → Click on Edit my info → make sure that the blue dot is on Yahoo! Avatar – if it is great, you can use the avatar, if it isn’t, make sure it is by clicking on it then scroll down the page and click on “Preview” then “Ok” on the page after.

Go to this Yahoo! Site if you want to get a picture from your computer to your Yahoo! Profile, to use it as your avatar → http://profiles.yahoo.com/
⇒ Once you get to that page, click on “change photo” which is just to the right of the picture image, so click on it
⇒ Great if you clicked on it, now a small pop-up page will load. On it, click on the blue link that says “add photo”, go ahead and click on it too.
⇒ Within that small pop-up page, another page will load after you have clicked on “Add photo”, this is where you browse for the picture that you desire to put as your avatar picture, so click on “browse” to look for the picture in your computer.
⇒ Yet another pop-up page will load for you to find the picture in your computer, so find it and click on “open”
⇒ Once you have done that, click on the yellow link that says “upload” which will simply get the picture from your computer to your Yahoo! Profile
⇒ Since this Yahoo! Profiles started, everyone who uploads a picture has to crop the picture, that’s exactly what you do on the picture that loads after clicking on Upload
⇒ So just Crop the picture and click on “crop” again
⇒ Last but not least, Click on “Use selected Photo”
⇒ Takes a process, I know, but its worth it if you want a picture

Is it just me or does anyone else agree that most conservatives on this site have avatars with angry faces? What do you think is the reason for that?

i want to change my avatar from yahoo messenger.the problem is i want an animated avatar, but not those from yahoo avatars. is this posible?

This is not possible. If you tried to place an animated GIF as your avatar, Yahoo will only render the first frame as a picture. This is so that more users will use the yahoo avatars instead as well as preventing naughty movies being posted as avatars.
