GIF is format for those animated avatars/signatures. You just need few picture captions and arrange it in you desired sequence and compile it. I think there are various GIF generator available in internet and it's absolutely easy for even newbie like me to use. Owh, btw i edit those picture with ACDSee only or sometimes i use Microsoft Paint. I'm a newbie in Photoshop thus i can't really use Photoshop for that reason. If you are able to get them both then its easy and should take no studies. Learning how to make those banners and avatars was easy and was a first time experience for me with me with photoshop.
