Avatar word looks like a sanskrit/hindi word but how come it is being used by an englih movie. What does the word Avatar mean in the movie?
It refers to an avatar, kind of similar to the hindu concept, but also similar to how it’s used in technology. A person’s digital representation is an avatar.
In the movie, it refers to the Avatar form the Marine assumes to learn about the alien race. From what I understand from previews, he is a paraplegic marine chosen to use technology to control a version of the alien race. So that form is his avatar.

The blue alien creatures are a native race on the planet. The main character is human but is mind is placed into the body of a blue creature. Thus the blue creature is the human’s avatar

In Indian context Avatar refers to the incarnation of any god who comes to free the earth from bad deeds. In other means it can also be the incarnation of any power to do good deeds. In the movie avatar it is the incarnation of a power to save the earth from destruction.

An Avatar is a cloned hybrid human and native of the world Pandora. A human conciousness is then downloaded in the Avatar, and it moves and experiences the world in this alien body. Handy, because the atmosphere is poisonous to humans.

Literally, the word avatar means an additional likeness representing yourself. In the movies case, humans enter these special chambers which connects their mind to one of the native blue humanoids. Only problem with that is, when the human comes out of the chamber, the avatar goes out cold, so its best to stay in there till the avatar is sleeping.

In the movie "Avatar" humans have created bodies that look like those of the natives so they can blend in. People control these bodies with their minds through a machine, much like in a video game. An Avatar… Like in a video game when you choose a character to play as..or the pictures we use online to represent ourselves. The humans make real life avatars with a mix of human and Nav’i DNA. Then they have machines that allow the humans to transfer their consciousness into the Nav’i avatars.
